This piece depicts the confrontation between Lady Éowyn and the
mighty Lord of the Nazgûl, mounted on his winged beast during the battle at Pellenor
Fields.
The nine Nazgûl were once faceless, powerful kings, corrupted and enslaved by Sauron's
seemingly innocent gift of nine Rings of Power. With their earthly bodies having faded
away to nothing, the Nazgûl became forces of evil, servants to Sauron's will. To them
Sauron gave ancient winged creatures to bear them through the skies. These creatures of
sharp teeth and cruel talons had long, sinewy necks and wide, leathery wings. Foul air
emanated from them at each beat of their wings.
The evil Lord of the Nazgûl wields a studded mace and wears vicious barbs on its armour.
Its hooded, faceless head wears a gnarled and pointed crown, a remnant of its former
majesty.
Desperate to prove herself worthy in battle, Lady Éowyn, niece to King Théoden rides
forth in the guise of Dernhelm, a soldier of the Rohirrim. Her disguise is necessary as
her uncle forbade her to go to war. Nevertheless, spurred by her passion to defend those
she loves, she joins the fight where in the midst of battle, Éowyn sees her uncle struck
down by the Nazguls terrible winged beast. She avenges his death by vanquishing the
creature and its dark rider with the help of Hobbit Meriadoc.
